Message from the Honourable Lindsay Blackett
Alberta Minister of Culture and Community Spirit

On behalf of the Goverment of Alberta, welcome booklovers and storytellers to the 2009 WordFest: Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival.Words can engage and entertain us; they can influence and change our lives. As artist and poet Jane Evershed said “To read is to empower; to empower is to write; to write is to influence; to influence is to change; to change is to live.” WordFest allows readers the opportunity to explore the creations of talented local, national and international writers. The Festival is an opportunity for all participants to enjoy an important part of Alberta’s arts and cultural landscape. Thank you to the artists, donors, sponsors, staff and volunteers involved in planning and arranging this tremendous event. Your efforts in bringing readers and writers together are appreciated.
Enjoy WordFest 2009!

Our Government is committed to supporting the work of Canadian writers and publishers and to assisting everyone who awakens our love of books and brings them to life. That is why we are proud to support WordFest. Once again this year, this festival introduces to us writers from Canada and abroad who are creative, talented, and passionate. In addition to promoting contact between writers and readers, WordFest contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the Calgary area. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to thank all those who devote time and energy to help organize this highly rated literary gathering. I wish everyone a time of rewarding discovery.
