About the Event
Join Wordfest for beverages, nibbles, swag and an engaging evening with celebrity blogger Elaine Lui and host Jann Arden. Lui presents Listen to the Squawking Chicken, a mother-daughter memoir that will leave readers laughing out loud, gasping in shock, and reconsidering what it takes to be a parent. It is a playbook of unusual advice and warnings about hard work, humility, love, friendship, family loyalty, personal style and finding one’s own voice, among other essentials.Elaine Lui is a celebrity gossip blogger and the voice behind LaineyGossip, a leading international celebrity news source followed by more than 1.5 million people internationally. Her TEDx Talk, “The Sociology of Gossip,” is about the critical place of gossip within modern pop culture. Elaine has been a reporter on CTV’s daily entertainment show, Etalk, since 2006, is now a co-host on CTV’s daily talk show, The Social, and previously worked for Covenant House Vancouver. Born in Toronto, she lived in Vancouver for thirteen years, before returning to Toronto. Listen to the Squawking Chicken is her first book.
Jann Arden can bring audiences to tears through song, only to have them, moments later, rolling in the aisles, through her off-the-cuff comedy. Whether she’s performing her music, hosting an event, or telling her deeply personal and affecting stories, Arden’s wisdom and wit shine in everything she does. To date, she has released 11 albums, boasts 19 top-10 singles, and has received eight Juno Awards. She has been honoured with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Of course, never one to settle on a single discipline, Arden was the host of Being Jann on CBC Radio; she has been a judge on television’s Canada Sings, and has appeared on CBC TV’s Rick Mercer Report and in several sitcoms. She is the author of four books including the bestselling Falling Backwards, the widely praised memoir of her life in rural Canada. The Calgary-based artist will release her 12th album, Everything Almost, on April 29, 2014.
Books by Elaine Lui and Jann Arden will also be available for purchase along with an opportunity to have their work signed after the event.
