Calling all Generations - Douglas Coupland is the 2009 Banff Distinguished Author

WordFest™ and The Banff Centre present Douglas Coupland as the 2009 Banff Distinguished Author. Douglas Coupland is one of Canada's greatest national voices. He is attributed with the term Generation X and brings to WordFest™ Generation A (Knopf Canada – Random House), a mirrored version of his Generation X (1991). Brilliant and timely, Douglas Coupland once again captures the spirit of a generation.

Coupland is the author of the Number One international bestseller JPod, which was also a TV series, and nine other novels including The Gum Thief, Hey Nostradamus! and All Families Are Psychotic. His books have been translated into 35 languages and published in most countries around the world. He is also a visual artist and sculptor, furniture designer and screenwriter.

Margaret Atwood is Coming to Town

Atwood fans rejoice! WordFest is proud to present this Can Lit superstar in a remarkably unique fall event. Atwood has penned a semi-dramatic theatrical performance based on her new novel, The Year of the Flood (McClelland & Stewart). The event will feature Atwood, three actors and a choir who will perform the original score by Los Angeles composer, Orville Stoeber. Stoeber was comissioned by Atwood to create the score for the original hymns that appear in her novel. The Year of the Flood is due to be released in September and Ms. Atwood will be available to sign copies after the reading.

WordFest is excited to present a special event with John Irving, one of the best-known and best-loved authors of the English language. On October 21st, John Irving presents his twelfth and newest novel, Last Night in Twisted River.

Countdown to the Line-up Launch

The WordFest office is all in a bustle preparing for this year′s Festival. The WordFest team has been tight-lipped about the Festival′s incredible roster of first-class artists that will be wowing us this upcoming October and we can′t wait to share the line up with you!

We are excited to announce the WordFest line-up on August 25th at 9:30am at The Art Gallery of Calgary and expose the 65+ events that will take place from October 13-18, 2009.

A Feast Fit for WordFest Enthusiasts

WordFest will once again host WordFeast. This fun, once-a-year, intimate dinner allows guests to really get to know the artists while raising money for WordFest.

Tickets are now on sale for WordFeast which will be held Tuesday, October 13th at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel.

WordFest Extends its Condolences

WordFest was saddened to learn of the passing of Frank McCourt, 2006 WordFest alumnus and Pulitzer-winning author of Angela′s Ashes.

WordFest would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Mr. McCourt′s family and his friends, as well as his immense fan base which he undoubtedly influenced through his impassioned personal tales.

WordFest alumnus Mark Billingham has won the crime novel of the year award at the Harrogate crime writing festival for Death Message, his seventh book featuring London copper DI Tom Thorne.

WordFest alumni Colm Toibin and Sarah Waters have made this year's Man Booker Prize for fiction longlist. Toibin, for his latest novel Brooklyn, and Waters, for her The Little Stranger, are two out of 13 authors—including many familiar names and a few newcomers—vying for the coveted honour. The shortlist will be unveiled Tuesday, September 8th and the winner named Tuesday, October 6th.
